SOYO DYLM24D6 Exterior

SOYO was the first name I ever learned when I became an enthusiast in the industry way back in 1998. That was forever ago, and now that I am in the golden years of my life at thirty-three. I am now more concerned with the better things in life, than getting ahead.

When I first treated myself to a 17" LCD display, I thought that I was on top of the world. While watching movies (all completely legal and of family orientation... of course) I discovered that if the monitor was just a little larger, I could really turn my computer into a dual-use system. Then SOYO went and changed their market focus, and nearly ten years later I am experiencing a downloaded movie (from Netflix) on the new 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor, model DYLM24D6 (SKU MT-GW-DYLM24D6).

SOYO has accurately determined that the middle-market demographic is ripe with opportunity, because it allows the every-man/woman to indulge within their financial means. I operate a successful business, and yet I still cannot seem to justify the thousand-dollar plunge into an expensive display, such as the Planar PX2611W 26-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor. More to my style and frivolous spending budget, is the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6, which cost less than half as much.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

SOYO knows where the gamers sweet-spot is, which is why they offer the 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor as their largest entry into the monitor market. Although they produce plenty of larger LCD displays, which are marketed and sold as HDTV's, the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 is perfect for the person who wants to enjoy widescreen field of view while saving desk space with integrated speakers.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

SOYO has included mounting points at the back of the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 to match the VESA 100 (100mm x 100mm) mounting format. A few days with the limited adjusting (very minor vertical tilt) stand, and I was ready to begin my second part search for the appropriate VESA 100 system.

Mid-level pricing begins to show, and proves that you are getting what you pay for and nothing more; sometimes that means taking from one to give to another. The stand is one area which barely qualifies as satisfactory, so let's hope that everything else shines as we look closer.

Detailed Exterior Features

SOYO has positioned the interface buttons on the right side of the 24-Inch screen. I suppose this is going to win some people over, and dissatisfy others who want their buttons up front. Ultimately it proves to be a moot point, because the menu interface on the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 is very Spartan.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

Much like the menu on this 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor, the underside of the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 offers the power receptacle input, DVI and D-SUB video connections, and a single stereo mini plug.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

While I clearly realize this is a product aimed for the middle market, it seems like SOYO may have really missed a larger audience by excluding component video or S-Video connections. I know some of you are wondering why I didn't lump HDMI into that category, and the reason is very simple: several high-end displays still lack the support for HDMI which makes it unreasonable to expect premium features in a budget model.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

You may also notice that SOYO has decided against adding USB ports on the 24-Inch MT-GW-DYLM24D6. Certainly there is no confusion as to who this product is aimed at, which would be those consumers just breaking into the widescreen market. Thus far, the DYLM24D6 has been a no-frills widescreen monitor.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

Like most everything else sold in America, this SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6 is made in the good 'ol ROC. Really though, it makes no difference to me where a product is made, so long as it is produced with attention to quality. This unit arrived without a single problem, and the picture quality was very good with no bleeding or fading at the edges. Our next section will detail some of the real-world testing I performed on the DYLM24D6.

Testing & Results

Testing Methodology

I first learned my lesson regarding heat and LCD's when I reviewed the Sharp AQUOS LC-52D62U 52" 1080P HDTV a few months ago. While the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6 is nowhere near the same size, it still manages to put off considerable heat. This is something that you should plan for if you have a confined space in mind for your monitor. I have recorded the surface temperatures using an Extech 450 IR Thermometer and display the results below:

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

So far my impression of the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor has been borderline satisfactory, but then again I have only been looking at the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 and not actually using it to look at 1920x1200 pixels worth of widescreen magic. So here were go...

Test System

DYLM24D6 Results

The SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor (MT-GW-DYLM24D6) proved to a very reliable component, with absolutely no dead pixels detected after testing with several free software tools. Several of these tools did nothing more than produce moving text or objects across the screen to test for ghosting, while others displayed solid color patters to test for dead pixels. Once the calibration and pixel tests were complete, it was time for a break.

SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6

I began with a few rounds of World in Conflict (open public beta), with my new resolution of 1920x1200. Since the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 is an upgrade from my 20.1" Samsung 204B, I wasn't expecting a whole lot more picture beyond the 1600x1200 I had become familiar with. To my surprise, I was impressed with the extra field of view; especially while playing video games with rich landscapes. I usually play real time strategy games like World in Conflict with the screen zoomed all the way out so I can see as much as possible. However, with 1920 pixels of widescreen display, it was realistically possible for me to zoom all the way in and still see a large portion of the battlefield as shown below.

World in Conflict 1920x1200 Widescreen

Once I had enjoyed my fun, it was time to resume work and get some solid performance numbers for comparison. I ran the built-in benchmark test for World in Conflict with the graphics configured with the "very high" setting. The benchmark was run three times in a row, and the results were all averaged. Here is the breakdown of frame rates at the defined resolution:

Resolution Average Minimum Maximum
1920x1200 (24" Widescreen) 25 FPS 18 FPS 54 FPS
1600x1200 (20.1" LCD) 28 FPS 22 FPS 59 FPS
1680x1050 (22" Widescreen) 29 FPS 21 FPS 61 FPS
1280x1024 (19" LCD) 33 FPS 26 FPS 63 FPS

I was beginning to feel like the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor was giving me a slight advantage over the competition. So I began another break... what I mean is that I began to research the effects a 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen monitor might have over a 4:3 ratio standard monitor. Yeah, that's the ticket; I went back to work "researching" the advantages a widescreen monitor might give to a player. In the course of my testing, I employed Company of Heroes (v1.71).

Company of Heroes 1920x1200 Widescreen

Without question, my scientific study proved that a widescreen monitor will almost always benefit a player in video games. The evidence was overwhelming. Just take a look at the screenshot below, and you will agree that this is far more world view than most players have, which means I can position forces outside of the viewable area of my competition. This also means that if he thinks of using this tactic, I will see it coming because I have the advantage of a larger field of view.

Resolution Average Maximum Minimum
1920x1200 (24" Widescreen) 46 FPS 60 FPS 20 FPS
1600x1200 (20.1" LCD) 53 FPS 61 FPS 27 FPS
1680x1050 (22" Widescreen) 55 FPS 61 FPS 29 FPS
1280x1024 (19" LCD) 59 FPS 67 FPS 42 FPS

After all of the smoke cleared, and several hours of real-motion movie and fast movement game testing had been completed, I was very pleased with the solid performance of the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor. Sure, the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 didn't lift and swivel the way I would like it to, and I couldn't plug my mouse and keyboard into it, but the screen clarity and response time was convincing enough for me.

Final Thoughts: SOYO LCD

SOYO offers something for everyone in their 24-Inch widescreen MT-GW-DYLM24D6. The cost-conscious consumer can actually afford to take part in the 24-inch widescreen revolution, while the buyer with a budget can use a set of DYLM24D6 monitors in an inexpensive multi-display setup. The integrated speakers prevent this from being the ideal display unit for a quad-display panel, but multi-display is still within reach.

Gamers will really appreciate the fast 6ms response time, which is virtually ghost-free. Unfortunately though, unless you use an adapter (into DVI or D-SUB) you won't be playing console games or watching television on this unit. SOYO may have painted itself into a corner with such few amenities, but this 24-Inch widescreen LCD monitor still puts up a fierce fight, and costs a whole lot less than the competition does too.

DYLM24D6 Conclusion

The packaging offered a clear presentation of the contents and product specifications, while still remaining attractive and inviting to consumers. Compared to the retail packaging other monitors are boxed in, SOYO is clearly pro-consumer by sparing us the myriad of marketing pointers and sticking to the facts.

For an entry level widescreen display, the MT-GW-DYLM24D6 still remains elegant with an appearance that could fool the most discerning shopper. The integrated speakers do not overpower the bezel size, and the frame is not too large. The stand could use obvious improvements (or total redesign), but the entire monitor is otherwise attractive.

Construction is actually better than I initially expected for a budget widescreen monitor. SOYO has recreated its new name in the consumer electronics market, and this 24-Inch widescreen LCD monitor has helped maintain the prestige building with the name.

The product functionality is not on the level of higher-end monitors costing almost 400% more, but then again the functionality is far more superior than most others. Despite a serious lack of feature amenities, the SOYO 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor MT-GW-DYLM24D6 still proves itself very capable at it's core: high-quality widescreen pictures with good color and brightness and nearly no ghosting visible.

Sold at a mere $299 around the web, there isn't another 24-Inch widescreen LCD monitor which comes close to the value SOYO offers in the capable MT-GW-DYLM24D6. At this low price, it makes for the perfect upgrade for any cost-sensitive project.

In conclusion, the SOYO MT-GW-DYLM24D6 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor is the best deal going with unbeatable value for the performance. Features are slim, but performance and quality are very high. Expect to be impressed with picture quality and display response, which are more than you would expect from a product at this price; but don't expect too much more.

Ratings:

We had a lightning strike at our church that seems to have affected our Soyo 24 LCD monitors. They no longer pick up the VGA source that we had going before the strike and it now tells us "Unsupported mode" on the screen when in VGA connection mode.

What does "Unsupported mode" mean, and how can we get it operating again?

on your computer changes your monitor settings, your computer may display an ?Unsupported Mode? error. This error is usually on a completely blank screen, which does not allow you to view Windows normally for troubleshooting. You can fix this issue using Windows Safe Mode and by configuring your monitor settings.
