How Benchmark Reviews worked

Benchmark Reviews published hardware testing, product reviews and technology news from 2007 to 2018, originally at benchmarkreviews.com. This site preserves that work. Everything below describes how the publication operated at the time, and is drawn from the archived articles themselves rather than written after the fact.

Who wrote it

Articles carry a byline. The staff roster on this page lists each writer with their location, role and the month they joined, as it stood when the site closed. Where a byline names a writer on that roster, their name links to a page collecting their work. Where an article was written by a manufacturer rather than by staff, which is the case for much of the news section, it is attributed to that company and labelled as a press release.

Editorial oversight

154 archived articles carry a second credit in the form "Edited by", naming the editor who reviewed the piece before publication. In almost every case that editor is Olin Coles, the site's Executive Editor.

How products were scored

824 of the 965 archived product reviews close with an explicit score out of 10. Most of those also print the five criteria the score was built from: Performance, Appearance, Construction, Functionality and Value, each rated separately. Reviews also list specific advantages and disadvantages of the product before reaching a verdict.

223 reviews awarded the product a Benchmark Reviews Gold or Silver Tachometer Award. The award is recorded on the article and in this archive's structured data where it was given.

Where the products came from

449 reviews carry a "Full Disclosure" line stating that the product sample used in the article was provided by the manufacturer. That disclosure is preserved exactly as published on each article that carried it.

Retailer links

Articles from this period include links to retailers such as Newegg and Amazon. Those were affiliate links: the site could earn a commission on a sale. They are preserved as part of the record, marked so that search engines do not treat them as editorial endorsements. The products, prices and offers they point to expired years ago.

No article here has been rewritten, re-scored or updated. Specifications, prices, availability, test results and conclusions are exactly as published on their original date, which is shown at the top of every article. Nothing on this site is current buying advice.
