Epic and NVIDIA Stun at GDC
NVIDIA and Epic used the Games Developer Conference to announce that Epic has added support for PhysX, APEX and 3D Vision Technologies to the Unreal Engine 3.

"Epic Games announced a partnership with NVIDIA to add DX11 capabilities to its popular Unreal Engine 3 platform, including tessellation and support for the GPU firm's PhysX, APEX, and 3D Vision technologies."

As part of the announcement, Epic debuted the Samaritan demo, the results of a six-month collaboration between NVIDIA and Epic Games.

"The Game Developer Conference is going on right now, and Epic Games just showed something behind closed doors that will blow your mind."

Epic's "Samaritan" demo features DirectX11, DirectX11 tessellation, NVIDIA PhysX, APEX clothing, multi-sample AA, compute depth of field, bokeh filter, subsurface scattering and other features.

"The look of the Samaritan demo exceeds what we're seeing in even the best cutscenes in games today. Lighting bounced off wet surfaces with amazing clarity and verisimilitude, looking just like it would in the real world. Level of detail allowed indivial wrinkle lines to be clearly seen on Samaritan's face and when glass shattered, each shard seem to respond to physics and lighting in dramatically accurate fashion. Epic asserted that what was shown was real-time footage and broke down images to show off the wireframe underneath all the shiny textures."

The best part is that PC users can get this level of image quality today.

"Judging by where everyone's jaws have dropped, it's odd that Epic isn't calling this Unreal Engine 4, but Epic's Mark Rein did say that if he had to assign it a version number, this would be Unreal 3.975.

Keep in mind that all the images that you see here, as close to CG as they are, run off of three GeForce GTX 580 GPUs - so the hardware to run these sort of graphics are available off the shelf today."

"Samaritan" was the hit of the show, driving huge attendance to Epic's booth and to the NVIDIA sponsored sessions outlining the technologies used in the demo. It is awesome to see.

PC Gaming Thrives at PAX East
The Samaritan demo is just one example of NVIDIA pushing gaming technology forward with unique technologies. To see more, you could have hit PAX East last week.

"At this year's PAX East event in Boston, NVIDIA plans to go all out and make a statement to the world that PC gaming is anything but dead. NVIDIA's calling it the world's first PC gaming ecosystem, which is a fancy pants way of saying there will be plenty of in-your-face PC gaming."

NVIDIA CUDA, PhysX and 3D Vision are all examples of technologies we introduced that were responsible for dramatic shifts in thinking by game developers. Translation: making PC games better for gamers.

Game On @ Tegra Zone
For those rocking a Tegra-powered device like the Motorola Atrix 4G super phone or Motorola XOOM tablet, your search for the best Android games is over! NVIDIA just launched Tegra Zone - a free app on Android Market that makes it easy to find games optimized to exploit the full potential of the Tegra mobile super chip. Consumers can discover unique, premium Android games with more visually-stunning graphics and smoother gameplay, such as Dungeon Defenders: First Wave Deluxe HD, the first game available for Android built on Unreal Engine 3; Samurai II: Vengeance; and Galaxy on Fire 2 THD.

Those who have checked out Tegra Zone agree, it's a must-have app for those with a Tegra-powered device.

"If you've been looking at a Motorola XOOM, LG G-Slate or Motorola ATRIX 4G then the Tegra Zone app is one you should definitely be downloading."

"Your super-phone now has super-games."

"Rather than downloading games and hoping they work well, you can hit up NVIDIA's Tegra Zone and know you're getting a professional, high-end game that is optimized for your device."

"This is the way app markets should be implemented."

"Tegra Zone gives you every Tegra 2-specific game in one place, including all the showcasing one would expect (screenshots, HD videos, etc.)"

"Once the Xooms, Tabs and 2Xs of the world get unleashed on the public, the Tegra Zone will undoubtedly come into its own, acting as a one-stop resource for the bleeding edge of gaming on Android phones and tablets."

3D Flag Waver
NVIDIA continues to fly the flag for 3D. Be it for home theater enthusiasts with cool technology like 3DTV Play or by enabling 3D home theater computers:

"It really is hard to explain the sensations experienced while viewing 3D content using NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology, it is kind of marvelous, I've personally seen many 3D movies in theaters but I can tell you after testing NVIDIA technology that it is 100 times better, it is way more optimized, it seems like before our eyes unveils a big window where histories and events happen in real time."

"You have to see it to fully understand how great gaming in 3D is, but I can honestly say that it is the best thing to happen in gaming in years."

Besides being the best way to experience 3D games today, NVIDIA 3D Vision is shining a spot light on 3D for games so developers make game better. It is also making it accessible for consumers, driving up the installed base to make it even more attractive to developers.

"NVIDIA 3D Vision is a landmark modern shutter system designed for PCs. By 2009, consumer electronics manufacturers realized that bulky head-mounted displays weren't the best way to handle 3D, so they produced a new wave of LCD shutter glasses. This time the glasses arrived in step with LCD monitors sporting 120Hz image-refresh rates; at 120Hz, the monitors can show two images 60 times a second, which significantly reduces the flicker that plagued older stereoscopic shutter systems."

NVIDIA has a long history of embracing and supporting standards, but we also support standards that allow us to innovate in a timely fashion for our customers - the way 3D Vision does. Since we unveiled 3D Vision technology over 2-years ago at CES 2009, the 3D Vision ecosystem has grown substantially-and GeForce customers can play over 450 games in 3D.
