NVIDIA nTeresting News: 12 November 2010In this Issue:
FASTEST. GPU. EVER. Surprise! The NVIDIA 500 series is here! It features our new flagship GPU, the GeForce GTX 580, launched with immediate availability. The new flagship GPU outperformed everything in its class and has been crowned the world's fastest graphics card. "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 is not only an absolute leader among single GPUs beating its predecessor by 15-20%. It is the leader across all GPUs winning over the dual GPUs RADEON HD 5970 in many tests. We congratulate NVIDIA with the launch of this highly successful top-end product ." "To put it bluntly, the GeForce GTX 580 is without question the fastest, single-GPU on the planet at this point... the GeForce GTX 580 is between 30% and 50% faster than AMD's current flagship." It also has best-in-class acoustics and great power efficiency! "The fact that NVIDIA was able to provide 20-30% more performance, with slightly less power utilization, and a quiet running video card compared to the GTX 480, demands kudos." "True to NVIDIA's claims of achieving quieter acoustics, the GeForce GTX 580 was barely audible even under benchmarking conditions." But two is better than one, and GeForce GTX 580 SLI is the ultimate multi-GPU gaming solution. That is part of our ‘graphics plus' features. "We've established on more than one occasion that NVIDIA's scaling in SLI, employing two graphics cards, is superb. That remains the case with its GeForce GTX 580" "SLI scaling was great as always and it was also good to see NVIDIA retain all of the great PhysX, GPU computing and 3D features/performance from the previous card." For DirectX 11, GeForce GTX 580 delivers unmatched tessellation. "GTX 580 easily took first place on the podium, especially as it enjoys very effective support for tessellation and acceleration of PhysX GPU effects." Want to see it in action? Take a look here. PDX Attacked NVIDIA made a big splash at PDX 16.5, maybe the coolest of all LAN parties. We took the opportunity to sneak peak our new GeForce GTX 580. We showed our two latest technology demos: Aliens vs. Triangles and Endless City. Then Activision showed the first ever live game play of Call of Duty: Black Ops. It was BAD ASS. See it all here. Not to be out done, AMD held a dance contest and used a slide of the 6870 as a back drop. Had you been there, you might have won a ‘special' prize. (True story. I couldn't make this up if I tried.) 3D Vision Surround Will Stun You While it won't "tase you bro", that 3D Vision Surround will stun you when you see it. "I watched a demo at NVIDIA that showed Ubisoft's latest state-of-the-art PC game, Tom Clancy's Hawx 2, running in stereoscopic 3D across three monitors. The visual effects on the 3D monitors were stunning, giving the game player a wide field of view that would amount to an unfair advantage over a player who was using a more limited graphics card. As you can see in the pictures here, the mountain imagery is much more realistic and sharper using the new NVIDIA graphics, which includes the advanced tessellation feature." 3D Vision will stun you because we work with developers to make 3D gaming freakin' cool. "During a recent press conference with NVIDIA, RipTen learned that Treyarch was so blown away by the immersion of 3D Vision, that they just hadto develop it for Black Ops." 3DTV Play is very cool too. "Well I just spent the better part of the last 24 hours tinkering with NVIDIA's 3DTV Play add-on for existing 3D Vision owners on my Samsung LN46C750 46-Inch 1080p 3D LCD HDTV and I must say I am impressed. While the 3D Play software did not recognize Aliens vs Predator as a supported title, it really stood out in the games I tested. At one point I literally ducked when a steel beam looked as if it were going to hit me in the head. That said I was sitting about 36 inches away from my screen making the experience that much more immersive." The 3D Vision ecosystem has grown substantially, with over 1,000 products now supported. 3D Vision unit sales are in the hundreds of thousands and will grow with the continued introduction of new 3D platforms. Some 30 million 3D-capable PCs are expected by 2012. Already, six of the 10 largest monitor makers are shipping 3D displays; and Asus, Toshiba, Clevo and Acer are shipping notebooks. Streaming web content, such as 3D Vision Live, and sporting events, like the US Open Tennis Finals, are happening. There are 3D cameras and projectors supported along with Blu-ray 3D players from Cyberlink and Arcsoft. And over 425 games are supported with 3D Vision technology. All 3D Is NOT Created Equal NVIDIA unveiled 3D Vision technology almost 2-years ago at CES 2009, since then the 3D Vision ecosystem has grown substantially. Now competitors are popping up. AMD says they have an ‘open model' for 3D, but contrary to everybody's definition of ‘open', Viewsonic announced a monitor to support AMD 3DHD. How is it? "I'm quite happy that I was finally able to make my new 3D HDTV somewhat work as it should with AMD's HD3D technology, but that took quite a lot of efforts and frankly the whole process is not easy even for a 3D enthusiast like me, let alone for a normal person." AMD wants you to think 3D Vision is bad, so they are calling their option an ‘open standard'. We believe that in this case ‘open' is just code for ‘we will let third parties do all the work, control all the quality, and support our customers with updates and profiles'. So do other experts. "AMD has a lot of catching up to do regarding stereo 3D support and if you ask me they either do not have the resources or more likely the will to properly push their own solution and technology as a competitive solution to 3D Vision. It seems that they kind of rely too much on their third party partners for everything and these companies are much smaller and with much more limited resources as compared to AMD. I'm seriously thinking that AMD does not have very serious interest in stereo 3D or at least they are not showing such, it is more like they just wanted to say we also have the same technology as our competitors in their business presentations." With 3D Vision, NVIDIA controls the introduction, product quality and we are responsible for the experience our customers have. We don't pass the buck. Related Articles:
