The personal computer continuously evolves, enabling technology to change the way we interact with one another. Laptop computers used to be a thing of the future, until they surpassed desktop computer systems to become the industry standard. Similarly, cellular telephones have progressed beyond a simple communication tool into the convenient SmartPhone devices we enjoy today. It won't be long before the SmartPhone (or UltraPhone if you're bleeding edge) becomes the standard, and various consumer electronic devices find themselves obsolete. In this Product Spotlight article, Benchmark Reviews examines the Accell USB Micro-B MHL to HDMI Adapter, a device the connects Smartphones and Tablets to any HDMI projector, monitor, or HDTV.

For those unfamiliar with the technology, MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) is a HD audio/video connectivity standard that enables devices with MHL technology to deliver 1080p uncompressed video with up to eight channels of digital audio (7.1). Accell's MHL to HDMI adapter connects any MHL-enabled mobile device (such as SmartPhones and Tablet computing devices) to a HDMI-supported HDTV, projector, or monitor. The adapter connects directly to the USB 2.0 Micro-B port of any MHL enabled device, and with the use of a HDMI cable (not included) users can connect the MHL to HDMI adapter to their HDTV. Additionally, by connecting the Smartphone or tablet's charger into the MHL adapter (via side port), the mobile device will remain powered while in use.

Think of the possabilities: watch movies or play games on any HDMI-enabled display without the need for a computer or game console, connect a projector to your phone or tablet device, or simply use the adapter to connect into a home theater system and listen to music in 7.1 surround.

Accell's MHL to HDMI adapter features the following:

  • Watch videos, view pictures or listen to music on a TV or home theater system
  • Supports all video resolutions and audio formats, including 1080p video and digital audio
  • Connect device's charger to the adapter to supply power to the mobile device while in use

Designed for use with mobile devices featuring MHL technology, the Accell MHL to HDMI adapter transmits both audio and video to MHL-enabled devices featuring the USB Micro-B connector. As of March 2012, the list of MHL-enabled devices includes:

  • Samsung Galaxy S II and Epic 4G Touch
  • Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, HD LTE and Skyrocket
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Samsung Infuse 4G
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • HTC Flyer
  • HTC Jetstream
  • HTC Rezound
  • HTC Amaze 4G
  • HTC EVO 3D and View 4G
  • HTC Sensation 4G and XE

For some users the Accell MHL to HDMI adapter will be worth its weight in gold, but as of now the list of compatible phones and tables is rather limited. Since nearly every SmartPhone produced since 2012 supports the MHL standard, it's a matter of time before demand grows. If your device is MHL compatible, consider the Accell USB Micro-B MHL to HDMI Smartphone and Tablet Adapter for $24.99 Online (Google Shopping).

No, this is a SmartPhone adapter that has nothing to do with converting disc to digital content. You'll want to look into software such as Handbrake for your PC, and a Blu-ray optical drive for the computer.
