Robots Going Parallel "Cloud computing really isn't an option with robots. Bandwidth is increasing, but computational use is increasing faster. For instance, our robots used to employ low-resolution cameras. Now they use 10 VGA cameras, so there is no way to provide sufficiently high bandwidth to a server farm. Therefore, the robot's computing power has to be local. The robotics industry is very interested in GPUs. In fact, robots may become the main consumer of GPUs a decade from now." Robots are already used extensively by the military and industry. Experts predict that the field of robotics is about to enter an exponential growth phase.
Market Share On The Move "Chip Designer NVIDIA has managed to gain a third of the Android tablet market, according to analyst outfit Strategy Analytics. NVIDIA has scored several production wins with its Tegra 2 chip, appearing in Motorola's Xoom, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, Dell's Streak 7, LG's Optimus Pad and Asus' Eee Pad Transformer." Next up is more growth, per Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang.
"Our genuine conservatism was misinterpreted as absence of growth," he said. "My sense is that we're going to grow, and we just wanted to take a more conservative posture in the marketplace, considering some actions that our companies, their various competitors and customers are taking against each other. They're not within my control or my ability to forecast." Huang said he initially was cautious with his guidance on concerns about the effect the litigation and other factors would have on sales of tablet computers and smartphones. But he said patent litigation is "just life." "At this point, it looks like it's much ado about nothing," he said. Project Kal El is rocking right along. Huang says the latest version of Tegra, "Tegra 3," code-named "Kal-El," is getting more design wins than Tegra 2, and that devices with the chip will be on the market in time for the U.S. holiday season. "This quarter or Q4″ is what he said. Meanwhile, we are maintaining a healthy lead in discreet graphics processors, too. "...NVIDIA still holds the top spot in discrete graphics market share with a dominating 59.12 percent of the pie, a healthy lead over AMD at 40.46 percent, according to data by Jon Peddie Research. And Windows 8 running on ARM is right around the corner. "Long-term, we think NVIDIA is arguably the best positioned semiconductor company to benefit from Windows-on-ARM deployments, especially if this architecture gains traction in notebook form factors," Mark Lipacis, an analyst at Jefferies, said in a note." Expect more when Jen-Hsun keynotes SC11 held November 12 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
Want 3D, Get NVIDIA "Speaking of 3D, TriDef's implementation is good but not as good as NVIDIA's. The Ignition software didn't detect all the games that I installed so some of them like Dirt 2 had to be added manually." NVIDIA 3D Vision technology is a combination of Graphics Processor Units (GPU), specialized 3D glasses, software, and certified displays, and projectors that deliver an immersive 3D experience on your desktop or notebook PC.
