3D Vision has an Ecosystem, Is Better 3D is hot. And since we unveiled 3D Vision technology almost 2-years ago at CES 2009, the 3D Vision ecosystem has grown substantially. This week we announced that over 1,000 products are now part of the 3D Vision ecosystem. "All in all, the industry adoption of 3D Vision is said to have surpassed NVIDIA's expectations." As far back as March, AMD toted an ‘Open 3D initiative' which is code for ‘we have no 3D strategy so we will let third parties do all the work, control all the quality and support our customers with updates and profiles'. "ATI (AMD) and its partners will supposedly soon announce a lineup of 3D products, including a 3D-enabled ATI Eyefinity technology (to counter NVIDIA's 3D Vision Surround), 120Hz 3D-ready displays and notebooks, active shutter glasses and passive polarized ones (have you heard of passive shutter glasses!?), S3D support for DirectX 9, 10 and 11, Quad Buffered OpenGL, Blu-ray 3D support. As you can see from the presentation slide above the 3D-gaming middleware partners are DDD and iZ3D, and for Blu-ray 3D support ArcSoft and CyberLink. ATI is also going to try to work on establishing standards that will help in having compatibility and much wider choices when building your computer and stereo 3D setup if they are adopted by others." So now that it has been over a half a year, let's see how that strategy is working out from them. "From the start, setup issues plagued us-we had difficulty with the iZ3D software, which was confusing to navigate and thoroughly unhelpful, as well as the Zalman Stereoscopic player, which doesn't work with Blu-ray 3D movies. Yes, that's right: This $650 (with software) monitor does not play Blu-ray 3D movies. Zalman says it's looking into enabling it to do so, but has primarily designed the monitor for 3D gaming. Unfortunately, its performance during our gaming tests was poor."
Maybe they had more luck with DDD. "That's the main problem here: the TriDef 3D system is functional, but not impressive. It requires you to tilt the laptop screen to just the right angle, and then run games through a third-party wrapper app, which kills the performance (we saw frame rates drop by more than half in 3D mode). Visually, in the sample videos and game tests we tried, the system sometimes offered a decent 3D experience, but more often than not we ended up squinting, closing one eye, or looking away." Here is what that SAME editor said about 3D Vision notebooks. "Many people haven't even seen 3D of the caliber that NVIDIA is currently offering, and so they have no idea how smooth and crisp it is compared to the fuzzy double-vision experience of years past."

NVIDIA has a long history of embracing and supporting standards, but we also support standards that allow us to innovate in a timely fashion for our customers. 3D Vision unit sales are in the hundreds of thousands and will grow with the continued introduction of new 3D platforms. Some 30 million 3D PCs are expected by 2012. Already, six of the 10 largest monitor makers are shipping 3D displays; and Asus, Toshiba, Clevo and Acer are shipping notebooks. Streaming web content, such as 3D Vision Live, and sporting events, like the US Open Tennis Finals, are happening. There are 3D cameras and projectors supported along with Blu-ray 3D players from Cyberlink and Arcsoft. And over 425 games are supported with 3D Vision technology. ION is Perfect NVIDIA is able to deliver premium PC performance and features in low-cost, small form factor PCs with our ION GPUs. Following the success of our first-generation NVIDIA ION, we introduced the next-generation NVIDIA ION GPU to connect to the Intel "Pine Trail" Atom platform. It's a discrete GPU with dedicated memory that attaches to "Pine Trail" via PCI Express. Asus put it in a 12 inch netbook, the Asus eeePC 1215N, and Win Magazine in Italy gave it a perfect score of 10 out of 10. "The thing that makes this unit unique in its category is the possibility of running games and HD Videos, without the stuttering typical of netbooks." (Win Magazine, October 2010) NVIDIA does not believe a netbook should be defined by its limitations. Next-generation ION GPUs deliver amazing media experiences for small Atom-based PCs like netbooks, nettops, and all-in-ones. "In day-to-day use, that adds up to a strong multitasking machine, capable of simultaneously streaming audio, playing 1080p HD video and still having power left over for email and browsing." Asus also used the ION GPU in a tiny HTPC, the AT3IONT-I Deluxe: "If you are looking to build an HD HTPC, or to setup a small and lightweight desktop for moderate production work [Office etc] then this is a very good choice for you. In fact, we have plans to put this in our lab as the new HTPC system..." Look for next-generation ION GPUs in netbooks, nettops, all-in-ones, motherboards, and discrete graphics cards. Quadro 4000 and Quadro 5000, based on the NVIDIA Fermi Architecture have been available since Aug. But the Quadro advantage goes beyond just performance and price. "But especially in the context of competitive offerings from rival ATI, new Quadro products built on Fermi are ultimately going to win business based on more than just graphics performance. With a holistic architecture delivering unique features like ECC and 4X double-precision performance-and for the first time enabling a C++ programming environment for high-performance computing-Quadro can tackle a range of computational tasks well beyond rendering. And it's precisely that proposition that should prove most appealing to prospective professional buyers: buy a high-performance graphics card and get supercomputer-caliber speedups for the many other challenging compute bottlenecks getting in the way of the day's productivity."
