NVIDIA nTeresting Newsletter - May 29, 2012In this issue:· NVIDIA and Icera get the nod for LTE from AT&T. · Diablo 3 is going like gangbusters. · GeForce 600M GPUs and Ivy Bridge CPUs are combining to make killer new notebooks. NVIDIA Icera LTE Modem for Tablets and Clamshell Devices Validated on AT&T's LTE NetworkAnother big milestone for NVIDIA's Icera modem technology occurred this week. The Icera 410 LTE data modem for tablets and clamshell devices has been tested and validated for operation on AT&T's 4G LTE network, paving the way for future Icera-powered LTE devices on the AT&T network. The NVIDIA Icera 410 modem is now one of only two multimode LTE modem solutions to be successfully validated by AT&T, passing through their rigorous certification process. Several editors gave this move a thumbs-up, commenting, "(NVIDIA) doesn't just make fast processors. It is now in the LTE modem business too." "The qualification tests this chipset has just gone through will allow product manufacturers from all corners of the market to quickly and easily get set up with 4G LTE and will set NVIDIA up for big wins in the connected AT&T smart device market for some time to come." "For NVIDIA, the 410's certification is a move that could significantly broaden its play in the mobile device market over the next few years." NVIDIA acquired the Icera baseband technology last year, and announced the first smartphone to be based on both its Tegra mobile processor and Icera modem - the ZTE Mimosa X - earlier this year. Diablo 3 Everyone?Diablo 2 came out 12 years. Diablo fanatics had to wait 12 long years for the sequel. But when it hit, boy were they ready. "Blizzard announce that they've shifted 6.3 million copies, 3 and a half million of which were sold in the first day. The launch broke Amazon records for pre-orders and day one sales, and became Gamestop's biggest PC game launch of all time. That number doesn't include the entire Korean market, where apparently Diablo 3 has become the most played game in Korean Internet game rooms." That is a lot of Hell fighters. And to hack your way through the new 3D engine in Diablo 3 with a better experience try turning on Ambient Occlusion shadowing thanks to your NVIDIA GPU. "To enable this impressive effect, open the NVIDIA Control Panel, browse to ‘Manage 3D Settings', locate the Diablo III profile in the list, and select one of the Ambient Occlusion quality settings before clicking ‘Apply'. The R300 GeForce driver can also be leveraged to smooth out any jagged edges in Diablo III using NVIDIA Control Panel FXAA anti-aliasing, an AA technique that is up to 60% faster than Multisample Anti-Aliasing, as used by Blizzard in their long-awaited threequel. Like Ambient Occlusion, FXAA can be enabled through the Diablo III profile in the 'Manage 3D Settings' section of the NVIDIA Control Panel." GeForce 600M, FTWA few weeks ago we introduced the GeForce 600M Series of notebook GPUs, a new top-to-bottom line-up of notebook GPUs with unprecedented performance and incredible power efficiency, enabling exciting new notebook platforms. "NVIDIA was happy to announce a series of design wins with Ivy Bridge, but while we're privy to them we unfortunately can't share any details with you right now. We'll have to wait until Intel's Ivy Bridge embargo lifts for that information. Suffice it to say, expect to see a LOT of GeForce 600M GPUs on the market once Ivy Bridge is launched" By any measurement the new 600M GPUs are revolutionary with excellent performance per watt, excellent performance per wafer area and excellent overall performance. This combination of power and efficiency allows OEMs to create great new platforms, such as this 11-inch gaming powerhouse from Origin. "The true power of the EON-11s lurks beneath this unassuming exterior. Configurable with up to an Intel Core i7-3612QM quad-core processor with up to 16GB of memory and a standard 2GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M handling video, Origin can pack a lot of power into this tiny package." Need more power? How about this Editor's Choice winning 15-inch gaming machine from MSI? "With Intel's Ivy Bridge processor and NVIDIA's latest graphics inside, the MSI GT60 delivers impressive gaming performance and audio quality at a good price." For gaming, bigger may be better, like this 17-incher from Samsung. "Samsung's Series 7 Gamer marries an Intel Ivy Bridge processor with NVIDIA's greatest graphics in a notebook that offers users pure gaming bliss." Lenovo knocked the 14-inch category out of the park with their Editor's Choice winning Y480. "The Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 combines quad-core "Ivy Bridge" adrenaline with speedy NVIDIA graphics to stir up the 14-inch mainstream laptop segment... Nevertheless, we're moving into the "Ivy Bridge" era and naming the IdeaPad Y480 our new mainstream Editors' Choice. When you consider its quad-core power, performance that'll save you measurable time every day, sunny screen, and comfortable backlit keyboard, it's a new benchmark for what $1,000 will buy." With GeForce 600M, we have a GPU for every platform, they raise the bar for notebooks from the UltrabookTM segment all the way up to gaming notebooks. GeForce 600M Series GPUs are excellent DirectX 11 gaming GPUs, with up to twice the DirectX11 performance of competing GPUs. In addition to performance, only GeForce GPUs offer: · NVIDIA Optimus technology, enabling extra-long battery life by automatically switching on and off the GPU so that it runs only when needed · High performance Verde notebook drivers · NVIDIA SLI® technology, for up to double your gaming performance. · PhysX support, for in-game physics · CUDA support, for GPU computing applications · 3D Vision support, for eye-popping 3D · 3DTV PlayTM software, for connecting 3D Vision-based notebooks to 3D TVs.
