NVIDIA nTeresting News - September 16, 2011

In This Issue:

  • Windows 8 makes a debut, and Windows on ARM makes a big splash at the BUILD conference.
  • CNBC's Mad Money host Jim Cramer has a "personal hero," NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jen-Hsun Huang.
  • NVIDIA just received its 2000th patent.

If You BUILD It, Win 8 Will Come
Microsoft invited a slew of developers to the coming out party for Windows 8, BUILD 2011. BUILD is a new event that shows modern hardware and software developers how to take advantage of future Windows platforms.

"If you have been waiting for Microsoft to tell all about Windows 8, today is your lucky day. After offering a brief look at the user interface at our D9 event in June and dribbling out some details over the past few weeks, Redmond is finally ready to tell all - well, probably not all. But at least a lot more."

And if the goal is to make Windows 8 the star of the show you better have a strong partner... and what could be better than a quad core ARM-based processor from NVIDIA as your demo platform.

"NVIDIA created the tablet to demonstrate what a Windows 8 tablet could look like. The device includes a quad-core Tegra processor, code-named Project Kal-El, which is an ARM-based system on a chip. The chip promises PC-like graphics and high energy efficiency.

Watch the hands-on video here.

It is a natural progression because a huge part of Windows 8 will be mobility. A huge party of mobility is the ARM processor. The biggest thing in ARM processors is Tegra.

"At a time when nearly every Android tablet on the market has the same basic specs, including a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display and 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, the Toshiba Thrive manages to stand out.

NVIDIA took this opportunity to shining a light on out roadmap of mobile processors, which includes projects Kal-El, Wayne and Grey.

"The quad-core Tegra, also known as Kal-El, is the first step in a three-pronged strategy to ensure NVIDIA's next-generation chips are deployed in the widest possible range of mobile devices, said NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jen-Hsun Huang. The new Tegra began sampling to gadget manufacturers earlier this summer."

This means NVIDIA also has a solution for smartphones on the way.

"Wayne is our next-generation [Tegra] processor and along with that we will have a processor called 'Grey', this is where we are going to integrate Tegra processor with Icera modem into a 3G/4G little tiny chip to address the vast majority of the smartphone market," Jen-Hsun Huang reportedly stated.

Windows 8 will reshape the PC industry. With Microsoft embracing ARM processors and mobile devices, the Windows experience will be more ubiquitous than ever.

"NVIDIA said it too is engaging with a variety of hardware makers for Windows 8 products using its chips. Every PC maker "on the planet wants to do products with Windows 8 on ARM," [Rene] Haas said in an interview."

With 15 years of experience with Windows, we are the only chip vendor with expertise in both Windows and ARM. We are fueling the fire with our Windows 8 Developer Program to provide developers with tools and resources for building ARM and x86-based Windows 8 apps.

"Windows 8 is all the rage this week, and with good reason. Microsoft's massive unveiling of the Developer Preview has the entire PC world abuzz, and that includes partner companies. NVIDIA is no stranger to Microsoft's beta programs obviously, and the company today announced their Windows 8 Developer Program. According to the GPU and low power SoC manufacturer, this will provide developers with tools and resources for building applications for the hundreds of millions of ARM and x86-based devices that will take advantage of Microsoft's operating system, Windows 8."

Developer support will be a key factor in ARM's success on the Windows platform, and no one does developer support better than NVIDIA.

"NVIDIA Corp. is known for its comprehensive software development programs that helped designers to leverage both industry-standard as well as NVIDIA's proprietary technologies."

NVIDIA and Microsoft are extending or long history with Windows on ARM.

Mike Angiulo, corporate Vice President of Windows Planning, Hardware and PC Ecosystem at Microsoft, had this to say: "We're incredibly excited about the innovation that NVIDIA is bringing to Windows 8 PCs with their ARM processors, and how this will help reshape the PC industry in ways we're only starting to see. Developers are at the forefront of this transition. Microsoft values NVIDIA's leadership in providing tools to the community."

Which NVIDIA processors will support Windows 8? All of them: Tegra, GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla.

Cramer is Mad For NVIDIA

NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jen-Hsun Huang was on CNBC's Mad Money with Jim Cramer recently. Cramer calls Jensen "a personal hero of mine," and Jen-Hsun talks about GeForce's position in China, why GPU attach rates differ around the world, the strength of our patent portfolio and tablets, among other subjects. Can you say ‘mon back'?

2000 Patents
This summer, NVIDIA reached a major milestone - our 2,000th patent issued by the U.S. and other countries (not including those of Icera!) We are all very proud of the pioneering contributions that NVIDIA making to the industry.
