It's no Optimus OEMs, press, and consumers want Optimus because the technology is seamless. Optimus turns on the GPU when you need it for horsepower, and turns it off when you don't, saving battery. End users simply use the notebook the way they normally do. Optimus automatically takes care of the rest. "Now that's what I'm talking about. This is the future, folks, and is probably a good reason why NVIDIA's 500M series has seen as many OEM wins as it has. Even being able to switch the graphics in the M17x R3 using the Radeon HD 6970M, NVIDIA's much cleaner Optimus approach runs wild over the competition." AMDs dynamic switchable graphics does not do this and requires manual input from the user for all applications. "You can choose whether you want the power efficiency of the former or the performance of the latter, but you have to make the switch manually." Automatic and seamless, (which is what they claim on their website) should be...well...automatic and seamless. Manual is not automatic or seamless. "However, unlike with NVIDIA's Optimus technology, you must manually assign programs that the discrete graphics will use. Using the Catalyst Control Center software, you can browse for applications that you want to designate as "High Performance." AMDs attempt has no profiles, limited profile visibility, limited ways to assign GPU usage for applications, and can't even use the latest graphics driver. "The AMD Radeon 6630 graphics can switch on or off as needed to extend battery life. The default is to have the GPU off when running on the battery and on when running on A/C power, but individual apps can be assigned a specific mode as well. It's not as flexible as NVIDIA's Optimus graphics switching, but it accomplishes the main task of making the battery charge last longer." Fact is, AMD's solution is not as good as Optimus. "Compared to NVIDIA Optimus, however, AMD's solution doesn't quite measure up. In terms of program recognition and features, AMD is miles behind. Only when AMD takes a few lessons from NVIDIA and smooths out the rough edges can it be considered a true competitor for automatic graphics switching technology." AMDs dynamic switchable graphics is their attempt to get an "OEM checkbox" without having to do the work. It is best illustrated by the fact that they have called it by 3 names and have de-branded it from PowerXpress to the more generic "dynamic switchable graphics". `Optimus is more than a checkbox. It is an award-winning technology that's being supported by every major notebook OEM in the world. "I think is fair to say that NVIDIA Optimus is one of the most impressive mobile technologies we have ever seen."
PC Gaming is The Shiznit "If you know anyone who's planning to pick up Battlefield 3 on a console box, kindly show them the two minutes above. It's all the proof you need that Battlefield 3 must be played on PC." (with VIDEO) Batman is loaded with technology you will only get to experience if you have a GeForce PC. "In addition, "Batman: Arkham City" supports NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, allowing PC players to also experience the action in stereoscopic 3D on GeForce GPU-equipped desktop or notebook PCs and compatible 3DTVs." Better get ready for action
People Get Ready! "If you demand the absolute best GeForce GTX 580 performance on Earth, you will find it in the ASUS ROG MATRIX GTX580 Platinum video card. This video card is built with hardcore gaming enthusiasts like you in mind. Everything about this video card was built around giving you the best overclock, and it paid off. There is no question in our minds that this video card earns our HardOCP Editor's Choice Gold Award. We love to see companies continuing to push the envelope! If we had an Editor's Choice award better than the Gold, we would certainly give that consideration." EVGA has been tweaking their design, and are set to introduce their GeForce GTX 580 Classified video card, which got a sneak pick this week. "Yesterday evening, EVGA Product Manager Jacob Freeman uploaded a pic of the shipping version to his Google+ account, which looks very similar to initial design, only gnarlier." If you want to take your game on the road, MainGear's Titan 17 is breaking records at MaximumPC with their SLI configuration. "The two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M graphics cards with a total of 4GB GDDR5 memory showed the power of an SLI configuration, running so fast on our usual gaming benchmarks we had to go looking for something extra to throw at it." More beef can be had from AVADirect and their Clevo X7200 rig. "What does a notebook need in order to claim the title of "world's fastest laptop"? The AVADirect Clevo X7200 steps up to the challenge with a six-core Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor, cutting-edge NVIDIA GeForce 580M graphics, 12GB of RAM and a blazing fast SSD." Need more juice? Toshiba has a notebook that can play games and get about 4 hours of battery life with Optimus. ".... yet it still provides nearly four hours of running time, heretofore unheard of in a gaming notebook." GeForce GTX means better gaming.
Ready Fight! Now in 3D "It. Is. Awesome. Let me say, I loved the look of Street Fighter IV, but adding high quality 3D to it just takes it to a whole new level. Gone are the eye straining super move animations and introductions. In place is some greatly improved 3D performance that is downright perfect." And the PC is THE platform to get your best Street Fighter IV experience. "While CAPCOM has announced an upcoming 3DS version of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, the PC's 3D Vision will always be superior because of full 1080p 3D gameplay, an experience that every Street Fighter fan should try out for their self and experience with some friends either online or at the next local Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition tournament."
The Motorola Photon 4G Super Phone with Tegra Shines Bright The reviews have been rolling in and people are chomping at the bit for this multimedia powerhouse. Engadget said the Photon 4G "is definitely the first superphone hit of the season," joining what others have said, "The PHOTON one of the most powerful Android handsets you can buy today, and a shining example of what a smartphone in 2011 should be." "The PHOTON 4G is an all-around fantastic smartphone... If you need a great phone with a killer specifications list, the PHOTON is the device to get." "The Motorola PHOTON 4G is Motorola's first real 4G handset, and it's a winner. It easily trumps Sprint's other flagship device for the summer, the HTC EVO 3D."
