NVIDIA nTeresting News: 10 September 2010In this issue:
Fermi and Optimus for your Notebook This week we announced the next generation of Optimus notebooks featuring our new Fermi GPUs. "There are an assortment of thin and light, mainstream, and enthusiast class notebooks coming down the pipeline that leverage both these new GPUs and NVIDIA's excellent Optimus technology, which makes switching between an integrated and discrete GPU seamless and transparent to the end user." These seven new GPUs make up our new NVIDIA GeForce 400M Series Notebook GPUs and OEMs love them. "Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba are all using GeForce 400M graphics in their notebook lineup." The GeForce 400M Series GPUs represent the ultimate performance upgrade for a notebook and are built from the ground-up for DirectX 11. "What makes these graphics special? It all comes back to Fermi, which was built to support those juicy DirectX 11 graphics you're so excited about." And with NVIDIA Optimus technology, GeForce notebooks fuse the great performance with great battery life. "This article is written on an Optimus-powered notebook, which in its nine months of service life, raised numerous eyebrows in executive meetings showing nine hours of battery life with Wi-Fi enabled, and yet being powerful enough to run World of Warcraft, Need for Speed: Shift and Left 4 Dead 2 in native display resolution [1366x768]." And of course, GeForce 400M Series offer the very latest in industry-leading graphics such as support for CUDA, support for PhysX and performance-boosting Verde notebook drivers. They even improve on 3D Vision notebooks. "There are a few notebooks available today that feature 120Hz LCD panels that are compatible with NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology, but users are required to connect a 3D Vision USB emitter, just as they would on a desktop system. These new notebooks, however, have the 3D Vision emitter built into the notebook's bezel, so users no longer have to carry around or contend with an external emitter." The new series includes:
ION-powered Asus Netbook is the Winner Last week the first reviews of the Asus eee 1215PN, which features NVIDIA ION and Optimus technology, hit the web. People liked it. Performance of next-generation ION was stellar. "Comparatively, as you'll see in the chart below, NVIDIA's ION 2 provided about double the performance of the previous generation and even ATI's Mobility Radeon 4225 graphics." And Optimus technology continues to deliver great performance with great battery life for the usages consumers value most, such as processing HD video & High-res photos, experiencing the accelerated Web or gaming. "We're seeing Optimus on more and more laptops recently, and it's close to becoming a must-have feature for any system with NVIDIA graphics." For a tiny notebook or netbook next-generation ION and NVIDIA Optimus technology make a great foundation. "The addition of NVIDIA's Optimus graphics technology makes this (ASUS Eee PC 1215N) the best 12-inch notebook you can get under $500."
"You won't find a faster netbook or one with better graphics chipset than the Asus EeePC 1215N." Next-Generation NVIDIA ION GPU connects to the Intel "Pine Trail" Atom platform. It's a discrete GPU with dedicated memory that attaches to "Pine Trail" via PCI Express. Next-generation ION GPUs appear in netbooks, nettops, all-in-ones, motherboards, and discrete graphics cards. 3D Vision Surround Will Blow You Away 3D Vision Surround let's you span games across three monitors in full 3D Stereo for an incredibly immersive gaming experience. "3D Vision Surround works, and it works easily and well. But more importantly, it goes beyond mere depth effects to provide a better ‘virtual reality' experience than any headset, gadget or system anywhere." PC Gamer, October 2010, page 92 The 3D Vision ecosystem is very robust and growing. 6 out of the 10 largest monitor makers are already shipping 3D displays. Asus, Toshiba and Clevo are already shipping notebooks. The Asus all-in-one has also been announced. Streaming web content such as YouTube and sporting events like the Masters 3D and US Open are already happening. There are 3D cameras and projectors supported, and Blu-ray 3D players from Cyberlink and Arcsoft. And there are over 425 games supported with 3D Vision technology. I'd say 3D is here to stay.
